Jaya The Cat

Jaya The Cat was founded by Geoff Lagadec (vocals/guitar), Dave Smith (guitar/vocals), and Ben Murphy (bass). Their first album Basement Style was recorded in Boston and was received well among critics and fans but failed to gain much attention outside of the Boston area. After drummer David "The Germ" Germain (formerly with Shadows Fall) joined the band they began touring the US and Europe.

In 2002 the band arrived in Holland to play the Lowlands Festival. In 2003 they recorded a live album, Ernesto’s Burning. After the release of the second album First Beer of a New Day Dave Smith (guitar) and Ben Murphy (bass) quit the band. The remaining members decided to move to Amsterdam where they have collaborated with a number of Dutch musicians, some of which have permanently joined the band.

Closing Time - Jaya The Cay

closing time is closing in
last call the bar is gesloten
don't have to go home but you can't stay here
stumble thru the doors into the streets again
might be an answer here but i don't know
gave up my sanity to save my soul
sms from the afterlife there on my phone
says relax while you're here and don't sweat the tomorrows
sometimes the money ain't coming in
sometimes you forget why you're living
sometimes you lose and sometimes you win
sometimes you give sometimes you get taken

under the neon lights sweeping the floor
put up the chairs and wipe the bar down man
one last shot and you're out the door
and it's over.

god knows but he just ain't telling
why the devil gets to sleep while all the angels have to
sing for a living in this offkey choir
forgive my transgressions, fulfill my desires
if i was with you i'd be home tonight
but you're so far away that i just stopped trying
better off sailing on this sea of life
from one port to the next
than sunk by your hurricane
sometimes time just goes slipping by
sometimes you can lose focus in life
but as you stumble out into the morning light
well it's alright.

Government Center

caught the twelve thirty from ashmont station
32 ounces with the rum mixed in
god knows i need it with the way i've been living
self medicated, chemical salvation
afternoon show up at central station
when the music hits i don't feel no pain
now i'm outside in the cold again trying to find my way

the sun is setting in the combat zone
the streets are empty all the bars are closed
and i'm walking thru government center
trying to find my way back home

dodging the cops at the ATMs
three third hand suits and a record collection
from late night raids on the salvation army bins
whatever god i pray to must be broke as me
got a busted 4 track and a dead end job
up at the downs on friday trying to make it pay off
on a twelve to one, but i got shut out
man i'd be late to my own fuckin’ funeral
read the headlines passing out of town news
says the world is still fucked and run by fools
and it don't seem to matter which drugs you use
it still turns out the same

this record spins the same old song
the speaker’s blown and the needle's worn
don't matter nothing in the end
they say when you leave
you can never go home again.

Voice Of The Poor - Jaya The Cat

and when you said it was gonna be alright
we almost believed you

it's the voice of the poor
in a dying land
the drunken the drugged and the damned
emergency broadcast straight outta babylon system
as the night comes in
and it seems like sometimes
that you're never gonna win
and it all comes apart in the end

punch the clock and you suffer in silence
knifemarks on the barstool spell out your sentence
the table’s fixed so take what you can get
they comp your drinks while they steal your chips
it's just a handout given with a fist
forced inoculation from self improvement
sometimes you take just what you can get
and if you rock the boat only you get wet
you want answers? so the fuck do i!
you got problems? get the fuck in line!
and this world seems wicked and unpure
everyday you wake up it's just like a war

it's the voice of the poor
in a dying land
the drunken the drugged and the damned
live and direct thru the radio silence
out into the emptiness

and as the rain falls over the faithless
i know there's a way but i just can't explain it
nothing to offer nothing to give
happiness in this world is so goddamn expensive
lockdown the borders but the lines stay open
mainframe is hacked and the code is broken
shots ring out in the financial district
as the words of the profits are twisted
they died for your sins but the bills keep comin’ in
and it's never gonna end.

The Carnival - Jaya The Cat

as the lights go down at the carnival
and the last ride grinds to a stop
all the bums are singing out ‘the parting glass’
in the church across the lot
and all the thieves and the liars and the hypocrites
that brought her down so low
all file past the coffin man
like wolves out on the prowl
and everyone has an alibi
no one was at the scene
the only eulogy is written out in spraypaint on the street

lady liberty what the hell is happening
it seems like your torch it don't burn for me
your children are hungry and can't find their way home
whatever happened to the dream?

all the junkies and the drunks and the burned out punks
out wandering the streets
just looking for a five spot of happiness
to burn away their broken dreams
and in a penthouse apartment in a highrise
standing high above the filth
you know the promised land just went and made a promise
to someone else
and the guns on the roof are silent for now
but you still don't feel safe
until you're locked in your room five floors up man
planning your escape.

Night Bus - Jaya The Cat

ten thirty at the shoarma joint
fueling up for another night
you get your broodje doner and a pack of smokes
two white pills and you're good to go
warm rain falling on the cracked cement
and if you close your eyes this city almost seems innocent
dressed in camo and beat down kicks
on a midnight patrol thru the kingdom of the wicked

put on your coat head out the door
spend your money at the poolhall
wonder what you're working for
now you're outside smoking cigarettes standing in the rain
waiting for the nightbus
to take you home again

somewhere out in chinatown
at a drum n bass party in a beat down warehouse
the generator has broken down
the music stops the lights go out
and we're all praying for a miracle here
postpone the dawn before we make it home again
like a vampire with a tan
and when the sun comes up you're the last one standing
feels like you're spinning while this world stays stuck in place
but there ain't nothing here you're missing anyway

Pass The Ammunition - Jaya The Cat

how'd it all get so confused?
last night i was smoking weed and watching the news
and as far as i can tell the whole deals screwed
everyones got a gun and their own version of the truth
they're turning profits in the name of prophets
everything we had i guess we lost it
and all this god shit, it's enough to make me vomit
keep your redemption i don't want it

under god, one nation
load the rocket launchers lead us not into temptation
and we'll roll our tanks straight thru the gates of heaven
singing praise the lord, and pass the ammunition

how'd we get so lost?
seems like in the human race the humans lost
everyone wants the credit, no one takes the blame
everyone’s pointing fingers but it all just sounds the same
and if you check the terrorists
down to the presidents
when you add it up it's just the same old rhetoric
and all this god shit, it's enough to make me vomit
keep your redemption i don't want it

under god, one nation
strap some nitro to your waist lead us not into temptation
and we'll carry our sins with us to heaven
singing praise the lord and pass the ammunition.

Chemical Salvation - Jaya The Cat

seven thirty on a summers night
out in the city cruising on my bike
i've been sitting in the park all day
drinking cheap wine and getting high
watching time just drift away
slippin’ thru traffic with my walkman on
no obligations nowhere i belong
a million miles above the day to day
lost my religion but i keep my faith
and as the night comes in
feel like i'm home again
got both feet on the ground
but my minds on vacation and i'm tuning out

i think the drugs are kicking in
my hands are numb and the whole bars spinning

the sun is setting and i'm feeling lost
down at the club trying to shake it off
it's too early to dance so i'm drinking scotch
hanging with the germ at the bar in my flip flops
sixteen fifty and a gram of weed
i'm a conduit for my own insanity
so i hit the bricks relax my mind
turn the music up glide along under the streetlights
across the city i make the rounds
and when last call comes i'm finally coming down
and as i'm headed home
feels like i made it
and everything's alright
so it's over and out
another transmission from the late night

Mistake - Jaya The Cat

well i met her downtown at a trance party
i was crashing in the corner when she came up to me
lit her cigarette she sat down we talked for a while
said she was looking for someone to waste some time with
time was all we had so we spent it like spare change
emptied out our pockets at the bars by the fairway
had a pretty good run before the end
got out before it caught up man
and as the black and whites faded into grey
they say that you can never look back
but i didn't wanna anyway

you know that when i said i loved you well i musta been drunk
because you're no one that i'd ever love
and when i exorcise my devils you're the first one gone
no use in looking for an answer now to what went wrong
and she said you know it's alright man
some things they just turn out that way

fifty cent beers in at the corner store
in a one room apartment on the 13th floor
sleep all day until the night creeps in
thru the open window to call us again
responsibility got knifed in the back
dumped in an alley and left for dead
but thru all the mistakes and the beautiful lies
that we told ourselves while we were blacking out
somehow we made our way out
but sometimes i miss it still
they say you can't raise the dead
so raise your glass instead
that's just the way it is

and she said you know it's alright man
some things they just turn out that way
and in the end it's just a mistake
that we had to make

Hello Hangover - Jaya The Cat

sitting at the terminal bar wasting my spare change
waiting on a redeye outta boston
fly me 33,000 feet up above the problems
drinking bloody marys in an asile seat
with the rest of the late night zombies
singing...

hello hangover how you doing my old friend
maybe we'll sit and have a drink and talk things thru man
cause i don't have time today to waste on you
call me tomorrow and I’ll see what i can do

somewhere on the highway between hamburg and koln
windshield wipers making time with the radio
there ain't nothing more in this world i could ever need
you just leave last night behind you
and you raise your voice and sing....

Thank You Reggae

eight thirty you head to work
get your coffee and your paper and pretend it's worth it
shakedown when friday comes
gotta turn your paycheck into more than surviving
but you know that there's something more than this
check the music as it hits

thank you reggae

wailing souls burning spear operation ivy
bad brains waiting in vain michigan and smiley
adf and jimmy spliff, kortatu and scientist
joseph hill, sublime, manu chao and the skatalites
and when it's 96 degrees you are all the shade i need
to help me make it thru....

thank you
thank you reggae

israel vibration, stray bullets the meditations
thievery corporation, signing off and delroy wilson
white riot to equal rights drop the bass all night till daylight
dillinger judgment dread, alton ellis seeed and sizzla
but you know that there's something more than this
check the music as it hits.

Good Morning - Jaya The Cat

goodmorning i know it's early but i had to call
just to tell you to ignore
that message that i left on your machine last night
what i meant to say
was that i don't want to fight with anyone else but you
stay out all night with anyone else but you
don't wanna wake up sunday morning lying in bed
with a pounding in my head next to someone else
hanging in the sun out on the front deck
trying to figure out where all the money went
don't wanna have to take the cat to the vet
pawn my guitar so we can pay the rent
don't want to have to take an STD test
for another woman it just don't make sense
and i don't wanna be with anyone else but you girl

don't want to catch a fire with anyone else but you
don't want to share my last line with anyone else but you girl
i don't wanna dance to drum n bass
and have some other bitch come and take your place
don't wanna eat fries from a paper bag
heading home thru the city in the pouring rain
i don't want anyone on the back of my bike but you
don't want to drink mimosas and stay up all night
with anyone else but you
i don't wanna have to sympathize
with someone else's fucked up life
and if i OD i wouldn't want anyone
but you girl to be dialing 911
cause i don't want to be with anyone else but you girl
goodmorning i know it's early but i had to call
just to tell you to ignore
that message that i left on your machine last night
what i meant to say is that i love you.

Blur - Jaya The Cat

wake up it's time to go
turn your keys in down at the lobby
no one's looking to awake but you can't stay here
pick up your bags and you're gone again
last night is just a blur
don't think i blew it too bad but i'm just not sure
stumble out the door and into the van
use your coat as a pillow on the window

who is this body in my bed?
what are these voices in my head?
will someone please tell me what's going on?
cause it's like last night i got lost
between the beers and all the shots
man i hope i didn't treat her wrong
try to place the name but everything just comes up gray
guess in the end it just don't mean much anyway
so i turn around in the bed pull the covers over my head
and i just drift away

and i want you to know that everything changes
you can see it all over everyone’s waiting

sitting in the back just watch the white lines flashing past
and try to make sense of my memories
open a warm beer i found there lying on the floor
put on my headphones let the sound just wash right over me
well i don't know where i've been
but it don't matter in the end
maybe it did once but i just can't remember when
so it's another night another town
just plug it in and tune it out
and you just drift away
